The
Darby (New) Translation
Translated by John
Nelson Darby
J.N. Darby was
the leader of the Plymouth Brethren movement in the 1800s. He was extremely gifted in
linguistics and translated the entire Bible from the original languages into French,
German, and English, and parts of it into Italian.
His English translation, know either
as the Darby Translation or the New Translation, has been gaining greater circulation in
recent years. This is because it has no copyright, and thus it can be included at no
charge with computer study Bibles.
The phrasing is often awkward, and it is
written with the "Thee's" and "Thous," etc. of an older form of
English, but it is a very rich and accurate translation. Also, most editions come with
some form of Darby's translation notes, which are quite valuable and insightful.
